Harry Shapland Colt 1869-1951. Royal Portrush ,Moor Park,Denham ,Swinley Forest,Wentworth,Rye,New Course Sunningdale,the Eden Course at St Andrews,Stoke Poges (now Park),Trevose, are just some of his creations in this country.In addition he made major alterations at Royal Porthcawl, Southerndown,Sunningdale Old,Alwoodley,Aberdovey and Royal Dublin. He made one special journey to America in the summer of 1913 to work with George Trump in the lengthy construction of Pine Valley. Colt played much of his early golf at St Andrews,and his admiration of the Old Course influenced his design concepts.Studying Law at Cambridge he subsequently practised as a solicitor in Hastings,during which time he designed Rye,but in 1900 became the first secretary at Sunningdale where he stayed for 12 years. A fine golfer,who played for England in 1908,later formed a company with C H Alison and J S F Morrison, and together did a considerable amount of work in Britain and Europe. Local golf clubs which owe much to his influence are Broadstone and Came Down. |
