The Ashley Wood Golf Course is a Downland Golf Course designed by P Tallack at a length of 6,308 it has 18 holes with a medal par of 70 and a 70 SSS Rating. Situated in the town of Blandford Forum it is one of the South West Golf Courses that you may want to play and add to our golf course ratings to see if it will become one of the RateYourCourse best golf courses.

Ashley Wood is a friendly and welcoming golf club, originally established over 100 years ago, which offers very good facilities situated in a beautiful part of Dorset making it a good choice when choosing South West Golf Courses . It is predominantly a downland golf course which drains quickly in the wettest weather and enjoys outstanding views of the surrounding countryside; in addition four holes are played within the Ashley Woods ancient woodland which is carpeted with bluebells in May.

Ashley Wood Golf Club was built by Sir William Henry Smith-Marriott in 1896 after becoming bored with the usual leisure activities of the day. Ashley Wood was the fifth Golf Club to be formed in Dorset, following Bridport 1891, Isle of Purbeck 1892, Lyme Regis 1893 and Sherborne 1894.

Golf Course Review of The Ashley Wood Golf Course spoilt by slow greens, once again I have played the course with greens that are so slow that the putting stroke requires a good smash and not a stroke.

The general condition of the course was excellent and as I have mentioned the greens would be to if they were a little quicker. One aspect of the course which could be improved are the tee's, some of which were uneven and didn't have sufficient grass.

One thing you will always get at the course is a friendly welcome from the staff both in the pro shop and in the 19th hole. In addition to this the course provides great value for money and you will always get a challenging game of golf on the course.

In summary I would play the course again and would recommend it to my golfing friends.

In my Golf Course Review of The Ashley Wood Golf Course is a really top Golf Course in the South West with fantastic greens and scenic views of the Dorset Hills. It is a favorite of many golfers who are planning a golf break to the South West. Just be careful of the wind as it blows a lot out on the course so if you are not a wind payer your are in for a good days golf. The course also has a full range of facilities including a well stocked pro shop and a fully catered 19th hole.

During my Golf Course Review of The Ashley Wood Golf Course I found this to be an excellent golf course to play. The staff at the course are very friendly and the Ease of Booking the Round is good although the Accessibility of Course is not the best is is still close to Blandford in the South West. I rated all the general facilities of the course very good and there is an ample Availability of Buggies/Carts/Caddies as well as a well stocked Pro Shop. The good news for the guys like me who like to practice before the round there is a driving range, chipping area and a putting green that has green speeds that resemble those on the course. When it came to the business end of the course the Cleanliness and Manicuring of the Course was really good and I rated the Tees,Fairways,Greens and Bunkers all over 8 out of 10. During our round the spedd of play was brisk and the course management encourages quicker rounds. The Layout and Design of the Course is not the best I have ever played and I didn't feel that the Challenge presented by the Course was that hard apart from the wind that made scoring difficult. The good thing about the course is that the ground staff have started to define the fairways more but I have been told that they wont allow the second cut to grow to much.(At Last a Course that understands that we all don't wont to loose our balls when we just miss a fairway) During my round I found that although the course was more open than most, wayward drives are punished on many of the holes by the nature of the landscape. The Ashley Wood Golf Course has a very friendly 19th hole with full catering and it presents a golfer with excellent value for money.

Ashley Wood Golf Course is a top golf course situated in the South West with a variety of challenges yet open enough for the less skilled golfer. The wind almost always presents an extra challenge and the finish can be very strong.Ashley Wood Golf Course is open when other courses are not due to great drainage.

The conclusion of my Members Review of The Ashley Wood Golf Course is that apart from the general condition of the course which is always excellent, the number of days play lost during the year is exceptional. During the last 3 years I can only remember 2/3 days of snow and ice where the course was closed.

The summary of my Members Review of The Ashley Wood Golf Course is that this is a delightful course with spectacular views over the Dorset countryside. Being high up on the Dorset Downs it is well drained and playable in all but the most extreme weather conditions and seldom closes, although it can get a little breezy.
