The Bowood Golf Course is a Parkland Golf Course designed by Dave Thomas at a length of 7,317 it has 18 holes with a medal par of 72 and a 74 SSS Rating. Situated in the town of Calne it is one of the South West Golf Courses that you may want to play and add to our golf course ratings to see if it will become one of the RateYourCourse best golf courses.

The former estate farmhouse, dating from the 18th century, has been lovingly converted into a superb Clubhouse with exceptional facilities and an informal, relaxed atmosphere, it is also known as the Bowood Hotel,Spa & Golf Resort

Designed by Dave Thomas who also did the design of The Belfry the course layout and design is exceptional according to the course guide ''Since opening in 1992, the reputation of Dave Thomas' outstanding and challenging course, coupled with high quality club facilities has spread far and wide''

The beautifully manicured championship course blends in perfectly with the wooded and undulating Wiltshire countryside and the views towards the Wiltshire downs are exceptional. One of the views to lookout for is the Derry Hill Church spire and the Queenwood Golf Lodge and one of our favourites is the White horse on the Marlborough Downs.

When it comes to the business end of the Golf Course can provide a stiff challenge to even the best professional Golfers when playing off the blue tees. The good news is that the course can equally be enjoyed by the club golfer playing for the white or yellow tees.

According to the course guide '' The tee shots are most inviting ,towards generous, sweeping fairways and encourage confidence - but be beware of the numerous strategically placed bunkers awaiting a slighlty errant drive''

Tips and tricks for the Bowood

  • Approaches to most greens are well guarded by bunkers especially the par 5 12th that has a double row.
  • The Course has 4 big par 5's namely the 1st, 6th, 12th and 13th.
  • For those not able to carry the hazards every hole has a ballout option leaving a short pitch.
  • To find the targets you must pitch all the way
  • Bowood is a Golf Course that requires a thinking approach as there are many options to play it
Signature Holes and features:

The par 5 6th hole which has a stunning view for the tee with a sweeping dog leg right which can inspire the more adventurous to try the tiger line over the lone oak on the dogleg. On the second shot the layup is made a little more tricky with a splash pool that runs all the way up to the green and will capture any shots hit right. The green itself is pretty tricky as it has 3 tiers and is very undulating.
Our favorite  feature of the Bowwod Golf Course is the large double green on the 5th and 14th which reminds one of the larger greens on the famous links golf courses.

For our Golf Course review the warm welcome offered by the staff at Bowood Hotel,Spa & Golf Resort will get you into the mood for golf and you will feel right at home. As the course is pretty tough it would be wise to go and visit the practice range which has undercover bays and a grass hitting area. Another great feature of the Bowood is an additional practice area of short holes that includes Tee's,Fairways,Bunkers and greens exactly like the main course.

Before teeing off make sure you spend a few minutes on the putting green as the greens at the Bowood Golf Course are championship standard and may be a bit faster than the ones you are used to at your local club.

Standing on the first tee you will soon see for yourself that the Dave Thomas design blends in perfectly with the wooded and undulating Wiltshire countryside and that the course is going to challenge all levels of golfers.

The standard of the golf course is exceptional an we rated most of the criteria as 10 out of 10 the only area of the course that wasn't brilliant were the greens. There is no question that all the heavy rain that the courses have been experiencing in the last few weeks has had an effect on most greens in the area.

The course is best played using the course planner as it will save you a lot of shots especially on the blind tee shots ''Bowood is a Golf Course that requires a thinking approach as there are many options to play it'' Don't expect a quick 3hr round as Bowwod not that type of Golf Course another good bit of advice is to look for the bail out areas as errant Tee shots will be a Lost Ball!

In summary the course is a true championship golf course that will test all levels of golfers and its views over the Marlborough Downs are exceptional, when we played the green fees were very reasonable making it excellent value for money.

For my Golf Course Review of Bowood Golf Course I think this is one of the best courses in the South of England, a tough challenge from every tee - it will really test you! Good opening hole; a tough par 4 and the course just keeps getting better with the 4th hole being a great par 5 for the long hitters as its a risk reward second shot with water by the green. This course is usually in good condition but can get a little wet in the winter. If you like to warm up before you play this course has a great range. The staff make you feel welcome. A must play!
