The Donnington Grove estate, which comprises of 550 acres of beautiful parkland, farmland and woodland, with the River Lambourn running though it, provides an ideal setting for a golf course.
The task of designing the course was given to Dave Thomas, designer of The Belfry and one of Britain`s foremost golf architects. He was assigned the task of creating a championship golf course that harmonised with the surroundings.
The construction started in November 1991 and finished in June 1993 when the course was opened.
Dave Thomas has to be credited with creating a golf course that is both aesthetically faultless and a great challenge for the golfer. Many regard the PAR 72, 7045-yard course as the best in the region.
The two nines are very different in character; the front nine is very undulating on higher ground and has stunning views over Newbury, whilst the back nine can be described as classic parkland, with an abundance of beautiful trees and water hazards that can unnerve the bravest.
Donnington Grove has held two Euro Pro Tours in recent years and in 2004 hosted the Donnington Grove Computacenter English Challenge Open.

In my course review I found that it feels like you play 2 different 9's at this course. The front 9 is more open and hilly, where the back 9 is tight and flat. In my view the back 9 is the better 9. The par 3's are a good mix of long and short. I think the best hole on the course is the 14th which is a short par 4 with bunkers down both sides of the fairway, then your second shot is over water to the green; a good looking hole which is then followed by a good par 3 approximately 170 yards with a very tricky green. The course was in good condition when I played there and having played it a few times and I have always enjoyed it. The staff are always very helpful.
